The “Crime on Campus” reporting program is operated pursuant to the requirements of the “College and University Security Information Act”, (T.C.A. 49-7-2201, et. seq.) enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee, effective July 1, 1989. The Act requires each institution of higher education to report to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation data relating to crimes occurring on the campus and in student housing.
The Bureau is required to prescribe the reporting form and format for the collection of such data and to publish an annual report of the results of such data submissions from each institution. The Tennessee Incident Based Reporting System (TIBRS) offense classifications are based on FBI definitions, which are used as the national standard for statistical crime reporting.
