Here's what's happening around VISIBLE SCHOOL... Straight from the mouth of the staff and faculty.

New Year, New Songs

Yes, I have home gym equiptment lying around that's propping up a coffee table. When making New Year's resolutions, or any goal for that matter, you have to think about 2 things.

1) Real - are you actually capable of achieving this? I'm not going to run a marathon by March. No way. Use momentum of the New Year, but don't set your goals so high that it will be easy to get disappointed.

2) Measurable - how do you know when you've reached the goal? "Getting in shape" is noble, but "Lose two pant sizes" is better.

It's a Straight Shot from here.....

Well, we're back from Labor Day weekend. Hot dogs, beaches, cook outs - well for some. For most of the south this weekend it was umbrellas and rain coats. Thanks to a weakened tropical depression. It rained for most of the weekend.

200 Madison - Day 4

Well, it's great to be in the new building even if we are still sharing space with the final construction workers.

As a faculty member, it's great to be here in July and to have this month to actually prepare our syllabi and our teaching plans. Wow! I remember my first semester, I started class with my syllabi only half done because I had just arrived. On top of that, I had never taught before or had taught these classes, most of which had to be rewritten.

MBM for Fall 2011

We're only 40 days from the start of the next full semester. There seems to be something Biblical about that. Right now, we're tracking down last minute applicants, getting started on putting all of those "next year I'm gonnas....." into actual lesson plans and....oh yeah....MOVING. Our whole school is now in boxes and ready to move downtown.

Choosing a church, choosing a squeeze: Asking the right questions

I couldn’t seem to find a good local church--not a perfect church, but a good one. Numerous cliches warned me not to look for a perfect church, but the churches I visited didn’t even seem to be trying. I read the leading authorities on finding a healthy, missional, gospel-centered, purpose-driven church, but couldn’t find one. I had all of the right answers, just not the right questions.

"I didn’t pay all this money to be unemployed."

The recent influx of sarcastic comments about the apparent uselessness of college education (especially as it relates to employment) can only mean one thing: it must be graduation season. What’s behind these sour comments?

someecards.com - I hope your fine arts degree taught you the fine art of being unemployable.

Thinking independently vs. thinking correctly

When I was younger, I equated thinking independently with thinking correctly. Traditions and institutions were not to be trusted. I was sure everyone had to think for himself. Tradition was permissible only if it did not hinder the pursuit of “real” knowledge. Eventually, I learned that self-reliance was equally problematic.

Looking forward

All of the exciting changes at the college got me thinking about the successes of some of my wonderful colleagues. I began to covet the fruit of their successes--not because I wanted their specific opportunities, but because I'd like opportunities too. Here's how I processed all of this on my morning commute.

DR BLUES MAN BILL WILL BE MISSED

We are very sorry to have to say goodbye to Dr. Bill Ellis, but he has been called to move on to other endeavors. After winning an award for the best doctoral dissertation at the University Of Memphis this year, Bill has decided that it can't get any better than this, and his own act is too hard to follow (just kidding.)  He and his wife and daughter are moving to Vermont, and we wish him Godspeed and the very best blessings the Lord has to offer.

Isn't it Cliche?

This week in our Songwriting Sectional class we discussed the always-effective use of cliches. Tired, worn-out phrases can have new life breathed into them by putting a spin on them for renewed interest!

Examples: "Unbreak My Heart", "Eight Days A Week", "Let Slip the Dogs of Peace", "I’ve Got Friends In Low Places", "No Shirt, No Shoes, No Problem"
